A substantial majority of the Vietnamese population living in Canada was born outside the country. In 2001, over 70% of Canadians of Vietnamese origin were born outside of Canada, compared to18% of the overall population. Among foreign-born Canadians of Vietnamese origin, 93% were born in Vietnam.
Almost all Canadians of Vietnamese origin live in Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia or Alberta. Canadians of Vietnamese origin are somewhat more likely than the overall population to be children or young adults their prime working years. The large majority of Canadians of Vietnamese origin can converse in one of Canada 's official languages.
